Abstract

Ruse’s book, Taking Darwin Seriously, was a very influential work, especially for those authors that proposed explained not only the biological but also the cognitive, cultural, and ethical aspects of human beings from an evolutionary theory. Ruse affirms that, in order to move from the biological dimension to the cultural one, it is necessary to take into account the contributions of epigenetics. This work will take up this proposal in light of new theoretical approaches and empirical data, especially regarding inheritance mechanisms. Concluding that biological/cultural relationships must occur within systemic perspectives such as the theory of developmental systems or the notions of extended inheritance not only genetic but also epigenetic, behavioral, and symbolic that understand evolutionary processes as interrelated networks with different levels of complexity.
