Abstract

The aim of this paper is, firstly, to show that from a perspective that construes cognition as an embodied and situated phenomena, and which furthermore views knowledge not as a set of symbolic manipulations, but as consisting of patterns of interaction between organisms and environments, musical practices can be understoodas an important part of a technology of cognition. Such technology would support the development of human social cognition. And explain its distinctiveness Secondly, we argue that this way of understanding cognition also implies a new conception of musical practices, as a particular kind human cultural and cognitive trait (or phenomenon). This suggests that the study of musical practices is fundamental to understand the role of music in shaping and maintaining the complex mechanisms that structurethe diversity of human cultural practices.
